19世紀80年代的薩金特畫作，大部分都是女性的肖像，經常於沙龍展出。這些作品都獲得正面評價。

薩金特的最佳肖像揭示了人物的性格。欽敬他的人認為，在這一方面，只有委拉斯開茲可以和他相提並論。

他當時最具爭議性的作品是《X夫人肖像》（Portrait of Madame X）現在已經被認定為他最佳的作品之一。

這個作品在沙龍展出的時候，卻得到了負面的評價，促使了他遷居倫敦。

《X夫人肖像》並不是有畫中人皮耶·高魯特夫人所訂購的，相反，是薩金特本人主動提出創作的。

他對有人寫道：“我很有興趣為她作像，而且覺得他會接受我的請求。

我正在等人向她的美貌表達敬意... 你可以對她說我是一個擁有驚人天賦的人。”

他用了一年時間來完成畫作。高魯特夫人在畫作最初的版本中，身上塗著白粉，穿著低胸裙，傲慢地抬起頭。

暴露的粉肩令畫作顯得更加大膽，性感。 這幅畫作在展出時震撼了巴黎沙龍，引發了醜聞。

薩金特企圖通過修改畫作，來進行補救，不過，無補於事。他準備封筆投入音樂界或者是商界。

擺放在薩金特工作室中的《X夫人肖像》，攝於1885年。
在遷居倫敦後，薩金特一直將X夫人肖像擺放在工作室顯眼的地方。
1916年，他在高魯特夫人逝世幾個月後，向大都會藝術博物館出售了作品。

1887年，薩金特首次獲得重要成果。
他在皇家藝術研究院展出的《石竹、百合、百合、玫瑰》被泰特美術館即使買下。
這幅畫是一幅大型畫作，描繪的是在科茨沃爾德百老匯的一個花園裡麵點燈籠的兩個女童。

他在1882年的作品《愛德華·達里·博伊特的女兒》的內景，就與宮女的內景互相呼應。
薩金特和以往一樣，用不同的方法迎接新挑戰。他用非同尋常的構圖和光源，營造新的效果。
